Get Involved Foundation
Christina Owen began studying and writing about youth and nonprofit organizations at University of San Francisco, where she earned dual masters degrees in Teaching and Nonprofit Management. She wrote her thesis on volunteer motivation for Palo Alto Partners in Education, and spent ten years working in Palo Alto Unified School District, creating and developing career and community engagement programs. She enjoys charting unknown territory in work and in life. She is a passionate networker, teaching students in the classroom and in the community to pursue their interests by making connections to their interests, talents, and passions and to make the world a better place.
After speaking to Silicon Valley students and realizing her passion for helping youth find their voices, Laura Anne Owen pursued opportunities with non-profits. She joins us with 8 years of corporate knowledge and understanding of how enterprises work, and how the changing face of Social Media plays into marketing and get the message out to connect with their audience. One of her passions is empowering youth, and her excitement to further Get Involved Foundation's mission is contagious. Laura enjoys exploring entrepreneurship opportunities, as well as taking care of herself via fitness and nutrition. She currently resides in Salt Lake City with her husband, twin daughters, and dog, Charlie.
Candace Wang is a senior at Palo Alto High School with a passion for community service. Since her freshman year, she has been actively involved in planning service days and numerous other opportunities for her fellow students. Candace is also actively involved in many other facets of her school, from social justice to the Speech and Debate team. In her free time, Candace enjoys spending time with friends and family, playing with dogs, and watching Netflix shows.
Nicole Chen graduated from Palo Alto High School in 2016 and is now a freshman at Georgetown University. In high school, she was engaged in community service for all four years and has a passion for helping others and social justice. She has carried on her passion in college. Get Involved is important to her because it allowed her to help her peers discover a love for serving others. Moving forward, she is confident that it will make a huge difference in how people view community service.
Michelle graduated from Palo Alto High School in the Spring of 2016. She has been a part of GiPA for about two years now and has worked on the developing and managing the Service Learning Program, managed the President's Award applications, helped with the website, and managed the metrics for volunteer hours collected by GiPA over the years. She loves what this organization is doing and will continue to support it long after high school and even college!
Vivian Wu is a senior at Palo Alto High School. She has been the webmaster of Get Involved after joining the team in the summer of 2015. Vivian works year round, updating volunteer/internship opportunities, posting fun local events, and adding more features onto the website. Get Involved has allowed her to understand the importance of exposing students to a diverse range of opportunities and experiences. This way, not only do they gain valuable skills, they can also discover their field of interest. In her free time, Vivian's enjoys hiking, taking photos of nature, and listening to music.
Jerry Huang is a senior at Palo Alto High School. He is the application developer for Get Involved and is one of the Summer Academy Staff. Jerry started working with Ms. Owen and Get Involved in September 2015 after presenting to her an idea of his iOS app 1Trackr, which now serves student interns at his school and others across the nation. As a student passionate for computer science and community engagement, he constantly look for ways to better his community through technology. In his free time, he enjoys going to the gym and running on the track field. Jerry looks forward to another great year with Get Involved!
Adrienne Kwok is a senior at Palo Alto High School. She first became involved in Get Involved after her sophomore year, and enjoys taking photos and creating graphic designs for the team. Get Involved is important because it initiates contact for high schoolers to start internships, which can often be the hardest part to finding service-learning experience. Adrienne's hobbies include trampolining and tennis, and she enjoys exploring national parks and spending time with her cat.
Evan Baldonado is a sophomore at Palo Alto High School. He is passionate about making a difference. In addition to being a member of Get Involved Palo Alto, he is active in the Youth Community Service, Speech & Debate, and Science Olympiad clubs. Through his involvement, he helps provide young people with the resources and connections useful to make a positive impact in their community.
Tara is excited to join the board as treasurer for Get Involved Project Palo Alto. Tara has previously worked as finance manager at University of Denver. Having worked with Get Involved Project for the previous six months as bookkeeper, she has a good understanding of the financial needs of the organization. With her skills and background, she helps us in developing the yearly budget, as well as ensure that the budget is adhered to closely. Tara understands the importance of accountability with regards to finance, and as a mother of teens herself, she enjoys serving in this capacity.
After volunteering for eight years with “Get Involved Palo Alto” and presidential award at Palo Alto high school, Wen-Jun Shen has seen the tremendous impact of community service to student’s search for their future career path. Being a first generation immigrant herself, she recognizes the desire and anxiety of stepping into society for youth and new comers. She embraces the power of listening and exploring to get a fit and growth for each individual, and would like to help youth to discover their own dream. She has been working with and would continue to work on the database of volunteers and host organizations.
